The first of the Franklin D. Roosevelt dimes was issued on January 30, 1946 which was Roosevelt's birthday. It was Roosevelt who started the March of Dimes which encouraged Americans to send dimes to fund polio research. It worked.
Vaccines are the greatest health advancement of mankind and it saved American society in the early 20th century. The scourge of polio infected a large portion of the population including the President of the United States. From
1894 when the first case of polio was reported it ballooned to over 50,000 cases by 1952. By 1979 the last four cases were reported by people who refused the vaccine.
What stopped this disease that killed and crippled was research and funding by March of Dimes and other organizations. Honoring the March of Dimes and President Roosevelt will continue next year with a
commemorative dollar coin.
